Suffix Registrations
The first suffix car registration format was issued in 1960 as an extension to the dateless series of registrations. The addition of a year identifier at the end of the string of letters and numbers saw the first issue of registration plates that were of a dated format. The format is very popular and there are many name plates that utilise the combination of letters and numbers available.
Suffix registrations capture the regional identifiers by using the 2nd and 3rd letters within the first 3 letters of the series of letters and numbers that make up the registration.
The first letter identifies the main region, whether that be a major city or a county, whilst the second letter identifies the specific town where the vehicle was first registered.
Prefix Registrations
The first Prefix car registration formats were issued in 1983 as an extension to the suffix series of registration plates. The year identifier was reversed from the suffix registration format and placed at the beginning of the string of letters and numbers. The format bacame very popular in the late 1990's as a personalised registration.
Prefix registrations capture the regional identifiers by using the 2nd and 3rd letters within the last 3 letters of the series of letters and numbers that make up the registration.
As with the suffix style registrations the first letter identifies the main region and the second letter identifies the town where the vehicle was first registered.
New Style Registrations
The first new style car registration formats were issued in September 2001 as an extension to the prefix registrations. The year identifier uses numbers rather than letters as the year identifier with 51 being the first number used in September 2001.
New style registrations use the same combination of letters as regional identifiers. These registrations capture the regional identifiers by using the 1st and 2nd letters within the first 2 letters of the series of letters and numbers that make up the registration.
As with the prefix and suffix style registrations the first letter identifies the main region and the second letter identifies the town where the vehicle was first registered.
