Isle of Man VRN’s

The Isle of Man has a Cherished Number Plate scheme with formats as shown. The scheme is very similar to the UK scheme with formats for prefix, suffix, and dateless registrations. However, due to the Isle of Man having a limited range of letter combinations available comprising; MN, MAN and MANX it isn’t possible to personalise a registration to a name or someone’s initials. The different formats are priced with fixed pricing starting at £100 for suffix style formats. The more exclusive numbers reach costs of £100,000 with MANX 1 as an example of this. Interestingly the prices reflect the higher values associated with letter first combinations seen in the UK cherished number plate market. As an example of this the fixed price for 1 MANX is 50% lower than the price for MANX 1. This price differential for letter first combinations is more pronounced than the equivalent market differential seen in the UK market. Significant numbers are recognised with 911 and the number 1 influencing the prices.

The table below provides details of the fixed pricing currently in place for exclusive plates.

SA22 RAH Top Auction Result

DVLA Auction Plates

The DVLA Auction held in June 2022 with the Top 10 results as shown demonstrates how the value of new style name related plates can realise height normally only reserved for dateless or prefix name related plates. The top plate in value was SA22 RAH with a cash sum of £45,150 paid for this SARAH name related plate. This follows on from MA22 CUS in the previous auction where a cash sum of £10,965 was paid. We have similar 22 series plates that represent incredible value in comparison with the following plates available at lower prices than DVLA auction plates: MA22 VYN, GR22 EGS, MO22 AGS, FE22 NES and MA22 KYS. We also have surname related plates at incredibly competitive prices in the form of LA22 ARD, LA22 ADS, MA22 ATT, GA22 ETY, HA22 UPS, HA22 APS, WA22 KUP, HU22 ENS and more. If you are looking for value then you just need to compare the prices for our stock numbers and see how they compare favourably with similar DVLA Auction plates.

DVLA Auction Top 10

DVLA Auction May 2022 Top 10

The May 2022 DVLA Auction produced some lofty prices, particularly for the first three lots on price alone. The top plate by price was PAT 3K which is a name related plate with an association to the Swiss Watchmaker PATEK. The second plate in the Top 10 based on price was occupied by 51 TES and we can only speculate that the high price for this plate was paid by a competing bidder intent on securing the number as a name related plate for Tessa and it may well be that the recipient was born in 1951 or that it was intended for a 51st birthday. It also has a remarkable resemblance to SITES and it may have been competing businesses bidding the price to an astonishing cash price of around £78k.

Third place, based on price was taken by a number 1 dateless plate in the shape of 1 YSD. This plate hasn’t got particularly popular initials and it isn’t in the original format (with letters first) for a dateless plate. Competing bidders were keen to secure the plate and its cash price reached the heights of circa £68k. The total cash value for the Top 10 plates based on price was circa £382k and the top three numbers contributed 49% of this income to the DVLA.

We never cease to be amazed by the values achieved at these DVLA online auctions and these prices have an influence on the market prices for personalised number plates. The trend on increasing prices continues unabated which is music to the ears of those investing in cherished number plates.

Toy Story DVLA Auction

The latest DVLA Auction held in April 2022 saw the top plate by value reach a hammer price of £61,010 which is a cash value of £78,337. The plate is either a SENGH name related plate or a SINGH name related plate. As most people know the number 3 is seen as the letter E in registration terms and it doesn’t really have a resemblance to the letter I. However, the plate 51 NGH sold at auction in 2006 with a hammer price of £201,000 and this may have been a pull factor in establishing the high price for 53 NGH. Yet again there are three Number 1 Dateless Plates in the Top 10 by value and these were topped by 1 NGX with a hammer price of £29,990 which is a value of £38,507. Second place in this auction was filled by a Toy plate in the shape of 8 TOY – no doubt destined for a super car. Three by one dateless single letter plates are continuing in popularity and this auction saw three of these formats in the Top 10 – by value. It would be fair to say that the biggest surprise was in the dateless number 2 VSS reaching  its hammer price of £18,330 and reaching the last position in the Top 10.

DVLA Auction Results

The DVLA Online Auction held in January 2022 provided some encouragement that affordable numbers can still be purchased at these auctions. There were an increased number of unsold registration numbers at this auction and prices across the range of the available numbers were reasonable. Top prices being paid for obscure dateless registration formats continued with cash prices in excess of £25k paid for 8 XV and £30k paid for 6 XN. The ‘O’ factor also continues as a theme with £89k paid for 75 O. Second place in the Top 10 plates by value was taken by a PAKISTAN name related plate in the shape of PAK 157N. Two of the top 10 places were again occupied by Number 1 cherished numbers. The interest in No 1 plates continues even for letter combinations that have a low popularity in the population. Cash prices exceeded £25k for 1 RUT and reached £45k for 1 OSM respectively. Someone also wanted to keep their options open with OP71 ONS attracting a cash price of £39k.

Devilish Auction Results

The recent DVLA Auction in December created some surprise results, not least of which was the level of interest in being a DEVIL. The price paid for DEV 1L reached the dizzy heights of £240,010 hammer price. Add 20% VAT and 7.5% Buyers Premium to reach a cash value of £306,013 for the privilege of being a little DEVIL. In second spot was a 3 by 2 combination in the form of 456 JR with a price reached of £47,188 in cash terms. A format such as this would normally be offered for around £12,000 in the cherished numbers market.

Bitcoin enthusiasm continued with a whopping £44,638 paid for BTC 80Y. In fourth spot was 115 LAM with this being an Islam related plate. Single letter combinations always demand good money and 841 G continued this theme of big money being spent on single letter cherished numbers with a cash sum of £38,250 reached. A two number and single letter combination would typically be marketed at around £50,000 in the open market, so the price paid looks a little lofty in our opinion.

In fifth spot was a RUSSELL name related plate in the form of RU22 ELL, and a cash sum of £35,203 was paid for the privilege of owning the number. At an auction held in 2006 a cash sum of £79,050 was paid for RU55 ELL as a comparison.

DVLA Auction Results

The Timed DVLA Auction held in October 2021 added to the fuel of interest in Number 1 Plates with, yet again, four of the Top 10 positions filled by dateless number 1’s. This is further evidence of the value these prestigious plates hold in the eyes of the public and the industry as a whole. The DVLA Auction process clearly works when there are multiple bidders determined to secure the plate of their dreams. The hammer price of £160,000 achieved for LSK 1  equates to a cash value of £200,000 and the hammer price of £80,010 for 1 NHS equates to a cash value of £100,000 with these prices reaching levels not seen before for three digit dateless number 1 plates. 3 CEO reached a healthy price, suitable for the CEO of a company although it isn’t the number 1 CEO which was auctioned on e-bay several years ago and is on the market at a price slightly in excess of £300,000. The registration mark 99 O looks good value at a hammer price of £80,470 and 7 XP continues the trend of interest in 2 by 1 dateless numbers with random and ‘anonymous’ letters.

DVLA Auction Enthusiasm

The enthusiasm for Personalised Number Plates in the UK is reflected in the prices recently paid at the DVLA Timed Auction in September with these Top 10 plates totalling over £0.5m in income for the DVLA and the UK Government. There were a number of surprises at the most recent auction with Number 1 Cherished Numbers heading the top ranking positions based on price. There were also some huge sums of money exchanged for names that are not hugely popular in the UK with MATILDA and FATIMAH combining to return the DVLA in excess of £80,000 in revenue.

On the face of it  95 O looks to represent the best value when comparing the price paid for 25 O of £518,480 in 2014 by John Collins of Talacrest who also bought 250 L and 500 FER at the auction in 2014. A Bitcoin related plate also hit the top 10 again following the previous Auction sale of BTC 500X. At this auction BTC 601N reached a hammer price of £20,010!

‘Oh My God’ plates continue to feature with 22 OMG reaching a hammer price of £27,150 at position 7. This follows on from a recent DVLA Auction where 5 OMG reached a hammer price of £30,110!

There were a very small number of registrations that were unsold at the auction with only 10 lots out of 1500 remaining unsold. It can be seen from these Auction results that there continues to be an enthusiasm for cherished numbers and the online Auctions continue to return the revenues that the DVLA Auctions attract  from members of the public and businesses alike.
